Thrips are found worldwide and represent a serious threat to several important economic crops in the US, including, vegetables, greenhouse grown ornamentals and forest trees. Entomopathogenic fungi show promise as part of a total integrated pest management (IPM) approach to thrips. This project addresses several aspects of developing fungi as an effective component of biological control, including conducting research to increase the thermotolerance of select isolates to improve their effectiveness in response to impending climate changes.

The brown marmorated stink bug is an emerging exotic invasive pest found in all of the states surrounding Vermont. It is causing serious damage to tree fruits and vegetable crops in several states to the south. It also seeks shelter in homes in the fall, making it a significant nuisance pest in homes. It is only a matter of time before it surfaces here threatening crops and homes. We are assessing the potential of using insect-killing fungi as a non-chemical approach to managing this pest.
