Multifunctional agriculture is a new initiative to change agriculture from a traditional production model to a more balanced rural development model with more attention in producing public goods and services. Multifunctional farm operation provides systematic linkages and interactions in the “new global economic order” between People (farmers, local residents in farming communities, and consumers), Place (farming communities, other communities directly or indirectly connect with farming communities), and Prosperity (farm income and profits, health of local farming communities, quality of life for farmers/farm families and consumers or local residents). This project focuses on (1) exploring what multifunctional agriculture means to New England farmers; (2) examining typologies of multifunctional agriculture in New England; and (3) levels of engagement of multifunctional farm operation in New England.
