Food and Place in Vermont

by Jessica Hyman on December 20, 2010

The Agency of Agriculture held a special event Jan. 10 to highlight recent work on Food and Place in Vermont.

Agency of Agriculture staff and contractors and researchers from the University of Vermont presented recommendations for protecting and promoting place-based foods in Vermont. These recommendations were developed through producer working sessions, market analysis, evaluation of the Seal of Quality, and researching Vermont’s food story.

The event included four presentations:

- Cultural Heritage
- Taste of Place Market Research
- Taste of Place Working Sessions
- Seal of Quality

Full notes from event coming soon!

Evidence has shown the positive responses from tourists regarding information and experiences gained from staying on farms, participating in farming related activities (e.g. pick-your-own), tasting fresh produce on farm (e.g. wine and cider tasting, restaurant cooking on farm), and learning about farm animals (e.g. petting zoo).  However reaching out to tourists has been a major problem for farmers who are involved in Agri-Tourism.  Many of the Agri-Tourism farmers created their own websites to promote their Agri-Tourism functions, and other popular promotion methods for Agri-Tourism farmers included brochures, pamphlets, and road signs.  One major item cited by Agri-Tourism operators is the lack of research on the most effective means to reach tourists on specific products and services.
